The Netherlands. A retired couple hid from the tax office and pretended to live in Switzerland – what was the punishment for them?

A retirement couple from Eindhoven avoided paying taxes for many years and pretended to live in Switzerland. The lie finally came out – seniors not only had to pay the arrears, but also were fined heavily.

The Dutch tax services have been prosecuting their nationals for years who avoid paying in the Netherlands. According to the “Algemeen Dagblad” daily, the services check, for example, who in the Netherlands often paid with foreign bank or credit cards. It was then examined whether these persons had to pay taxes in the Netherlands.

A couple of pensioners were hiding from the tax office

This is how a retirement couple from Eindhoven came in. In 2013-2016, they should pay the tax office hundreds of thousands of euros. They did not do this, explaining that they live and pay taxes in Switzerland.

“In the course of the proceedings of the tax authorities, it turned out that this is not true” – we read in the journal. As explained, the couple regularly paid out large sums in Eindhoven using their overseas account.

Seniors avoided a lawsuit, but had to pay off their financial obligations of 1.2 million euros and a fine – 1 million euros. The journal explained that in such cases the sentence is also sentenced to imprisonment, but due to the advanced age of the couple, it was decided to abandon this measure.
