The Netflix founder backed Harris. The platform lost subscribers

The number of cancellations of subscriptions to the streaming service Netflix has tripled in the days after the co-founder of the platform and the executive chairman of the board supported the presidential candidate Democratic Party.

Reed Hastings donated $7 million to Kamala Harris’ campaign. Republican supporters and Donald Trump encouraged a boycott of the stage. They posted pictures on social media with information about canceling their Netflix subscriptions and the hashtag #CancelNetflix.

Basic package policy and liquidation

The Bloomberg news agency, citing data from Antenna, said that Netflix’s churn rate in the United States in July this year was 2.8%. On July 26, three days after the platform’s chief publicly endorsed the Democratic candidate, Netflix recorded its worst day of the year in terms of subscription cancellations. The Republican-inspired boycott negatively impacted the streaming service’s performance for five days. The company did not comment on this matter.

The overall performance of Netflix in the United States in July 2024 was also affected by the decision to eliminate the basic plan without ad for existing subscribers. “Choose a new plan to continue using the service. Your basic plan will no longer be available, but you can switch to another one. Package prices start at $5.99,” he said.

Despite problems in the US, Netflix is ​​gaining additional subscribers around the world – pointed out the Wirtualne Media portal. At the end of June, 277.65 million customers used the platform, 39.26 million (16.5%) more than a year ago. In the second quarter, the number of subscribers increased by 8.05 million.

In Poland, the basic package costs PLN 33 per month (previously PLN 29), standard – PLN 49 (previously PLN 43), and premium – PLN 67 (previously PLN 60). The access fee for a non-household user increased from PLN 9.99 to PLN 13. Netflix is ​​a streaming service on a subscription basis, which allows users to watch movies, series and entertainment programs.
