Even though it is a scene that is always popular in many PC games, not all game companies, even those at the giant level, have a positive view of the concept of modding itself. They share this perspective regardless of whether the engine they use as their mainstay is indeed easy to facilitate this. Being one of the “victims” who is often targeted, Capcom apparently does not always view modding as something positive. In fact, they see it as no different from the cheat systems that are scattered around, which of course is a problem in itself.
This was expressed by one of Capcom’s programmers regarding the anti-cheat and anti-piracy system for RE Engine. In one of the sessions focused on discussing mods, he said that for Capcom, mods were actually seen as no different from cheats. Even though it is acknowledged that they cannot be separated from the PC gaming ecosystem, all mods that are not officially supported will be difficult to distinguish from cheats.
He also admitted that there are many mods out there that do have a positive impact on the game, but quite a few are destructive. The mods he said threatened the company’s reputation and ended up increasing the company’s burden. For this last matter, once a mod ends up making the game not run properly, it is often Capcom customer support that gets complaints and looks for a way out, something they say ends up wasting resources. Meanwhile, in terms of reputation, it is clear that there are mods that end up being offensive and immoral.
Unfortunately, it is not clear whether this sentiment will result in making Capcom’s next-gen engine – REX Engine more difficult to inject mods or not. What do you think of this situation?
