A recent medical study revealed the negative effects of hair straighteners on women’s fertility.
A Boston University School of Public Health study found that chemical hair straightening products may affect women’s ability to conceive.
“Our study underscores the importance of expanding research on the effects of beauty products on reproductive health,” said lead author Lauren Wise, associate professor of epidemiology.
According to the study, women of African or Latino origin were most at risk from this category of hair products, given their constant pursuit of conformity with European beauty standards, including straight hair.
The study included the participation of 11,000 women who used hair straightening products during the period between 2014 and 2022, according to the UPI news agency.
The study found a delay in pregnancy in women who used hair straightening products, compared to others who did not use any of them.
One of the findings of the study was that female participants who used hair straightening products for a long time or five times a year had the lowest fertility rate.
The study attributed the effect of hair straighteners on women’s fertility to the fact that these products contain phthalates, phenols and parabens.
