The Naval Group has reported the first ever repair, in which the front of a damaged nuclear submarine was replaced with the front of another submarine of the same type.
What is known
Submarine Perle Rubis class returned to the French Navy after the completion of repairs. The service said that experts examined the submarine and confirmed the ability to return to duty.
Naval Group does not disclose the cost of repairs. Earlier there was information that the replacement of the front part, which was damaged in a fire, will cost €110 million, of which €60 million is covered by the guarantee, and the rest of the amount is paid by the French Ministry of Defense.
The Perle submarine incident took place on June 12, 2020. The submarine caught fire during a major overhaul in the dry dock of the Naval Group. The 14-hour fire altered the properties of the steel at the front, rendering the submarine unusable.
The section containing the nuclear power plant was not damaged. It was also noted that there were no weapons or nuclear material on board at the time of the fire.
Ultimately, Naval Group specialists cut off the bow and instead installed the bow of the decommissioned Saphir submarine. She was commissioned in 1984 and decommissioned a year before the Perle incident.
