The Nautilus is the big star of submarines. Terror of the oceans and property of the terrible Captain Nemo, he accidentally collects on board Pierre Aronnax, scientist, Council, his servant, and Ned Land, Quebec harpooner, all three fallen from a ship chasing him. A long-haul journey follows, leading them from the South Pole to the treasures of Atlantis, via the Isthmus of Suez and the Pacific Islands.

His explorations around the globe can be read in 174 languages, making this novel one of the most translated in world literature. The reason for this success? A winning cocktail combining children’s literature, adventure novels and an apology for science. Because, in the 19th century, it was no longer religion but science that explained the world. And the exploration of the Earth is no exception to this secularization.
