“Edgar could be called a Latvian percussionist guru, he teaches young musicians at the Jurmala School of Music and the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, gives master classes, plays in the orchestra and in various chamber music ensembles and solos. Given how many different percussion instruments Edgar manages, he could definitely be a man-orchestra! The first part of the concert will be an opportunity to watch the excellent Baster Kiton silent comedy “Safety Last!”. Plato Buravickis composed music for a large orchestra for this 1923 film a few years ago, while Rihards Zaļupe has transferred this impressive piece to five percussionists.

The program also includes Zaļupe’s new work “Rebonds C” for percussion and orchestra, which was commissioned for this anniversary concert as a tribute to Zaļupe’s former teacher Edgars Saxons. Rihards Zaļupe and Edgars Saksons will play solo.

One of the soloists of the concert will be Lithuania’s leading percussionist Pavel Gjunters.

The concert will also feature works by Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg and Lithuanian composer Anatoly Shenderov.
