Valorant, Overwatch 2, Rocket League… The dozens of computer screens lined up one after the other all broadcast video game images. And yet, it is not a gaming room, but rather a classroom.
In Sunderland, in the north-east of England, a high-level e-sports training campus has opened its doors. The objective: to boost and structure the ecosystem in the United Kingdom.
The British federation has invested around 7 million pounds (more than 8 million euros) in the National Esports Performance Campus. British Esports also provides training for a range of careers in the sector at educational establishments across the country.
A rapidly growing sector
“The esports industry is made up of many different professions. There is event management, the business side, the creative media side, then there is the sports side where (there are) the players and the psychologists, the nutritionists too,” explains Tobias Bowery, manager, in the video. from Sunderland College’s esports program.
The United Kingdom considers itself to be lagging behind in e-sport, particularly compared to the United States and China.
The global e-sports market was estimated at $1.8 billion in 2022, according to a report by Nielsen and specialist company Ex Corp. Although it only represents a marginal share of the overall video games market ($237 billion), the sector is nevertheless dynamic: it could grow by 50% by 2026.
