Fish farming is an area that has been growing steadily in recent years, and only in 2019 it was possible to produce 19,000 tons, according to journalistic publications.
Taiwan’s experience in aquaculture and its support in the development of the pacú farming industry in Paraguay was essential for such growth through the assistance provided.
The Technical Mission of Taiwan, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), has been developing in the Eusebio Ayala Fingerling Production and Cultivation Laboratory, located in the National Center for Fingerling Production, the use of the auto system – Reproduction and incubation of the pacú culture.

Such a system is a less harmful natural fertilization method for brood fish, which was designed and patented by Dr. Fu-Guang Liu, who is Deputy Director of the Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute (FRICOA).
The importance of the Taiwanese method is that the applied process reduces the damage caused by traditional methods to the brood fish, thus raising the survival rate from 2% to more than 80%.
This improvement in reproduction occurs as the fertilized eggs are better preserved, while allowing greater use of water and energy, as indicated by specialists from the Technical Mission of Taiwan.
To be more precise, they explained that the pacú is a fish that has abundant body fat around the organs, in addition to having greater muscle mass in the abdomen area, while its ribs are relatively thick, so in a traditional process For insemination, it is necessary to apply greater pressure to extract the eggs and sperm, thus generating internal lesions in the fish.
Another drawback suffered by local reproduction is the lack of knowledge of the spawning period, since the females have a short ovulation cycle of 2 hours, and if the eggs are not yet fully mature, they will not be able to be squeezed, having to return to the fish to the pond and repeat the procedure after two hours.
With the aforementioned, due to the lack of knowledge, each egg collection represented a high risk for the reproductive females, and with the self-reproduction and incubation system or natural fertilization method it was possible to correct it.
It should be mentioned that as a native species of Paraguay and to gain greater strength, it was declared April 11 as the “Day of the Pacú”, a date of institutional interest by the MAG.
