The narrowest skyscraper in the world opens and impresses New York

The postcard from Manhattan has continued to evolve in recent years. In question, the massive arrival of new “pencil” skyscrapers, which have come to tear themselves out of the ground to reach more than 400 meters in height.

After the famous building at 432 Park Avenue, which has regularly been talked about for the price and the view of its luxurious apartments (but also their wind resistance problems), now a newcomer is talking about him and lands a new record.

Baptized “Steinway Tower”, the world will soon call it by its address: 111 West 57th Street. Near the intersection with Sixth Avenue, on the outskirts of Central Park in the heart of New York, a new 435-meter skyscraper has just finished its work. The first inhabitants will soon settle there.

The project lasted seven years and today it is already in the press. According to an article published by The seasit is the narrowest skyscraper in the world.

“Never seen”

“As New Yorkers, we are incredibly proud to add a new icon to our skyline”declared the architecture company behind the project, SHoP Architects to the American trade magazine. “We had an opportunity to do something that had never been done before”confided its director Gregg Pasquarelli.

Its other particularity lies in the reduction of its width per level, on the top floors, and the incredible view (both on Central Park and on Lower Manhattan) which will benefit the accommodation on the top floor. According to rumors, its price could reach 100 million dollars.

Terraces are provided on each landing where the skyscraper becomes narrower. To achieve such a format, the tower would use the strongest concrete in the world, in large quantities (37 million litres). In technical terms, the tower has a height/length ratio of 24:1, enough to grant it the world record for its narrowness.

To better appreciate its exceptional form, the YouTube channel “The Dronalist” had fun following the progress of the work over the years. His latest video shows a good overview of the tower which is almost finished today.

Besides its world record, the tower also called “Steinway” is the third tallest in New York, and the fourth tallest in the United States. To give you an idea, the Empire State Building, figure of the city, is perched only 381 meters high.

On the images taken with the drone, this difference in size is striking. The icons of yesteryear have nothing to do with the size of new buildings.
