The narrative of religious politics in the DKI Pilkada from Ahok, Not Anies

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

DPP NasDem Party chairman Effendy Choirie or Gus Choi believes that the use of religiously-tinged narratives for politics in the 2017 DKI Jakarta Pilkada originated from the actions of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ah OKnot Anies Baswedan.

He also denied that the NasDem party presidential candidate released an identity politics narrative when he competed in the DKI Jakarta Pilkada, which he has so far been frequently accused of.

“We see from beginning to end, there is no narrative, for example, Anies is a religious narrative. I’m sorry about this Jakarta connection, actually, this actually started with Ahok,” Gus Choi said in a discussion policy held at Kopi Politik, South Jakarta, Saturday (7/1).

“It’s just that a statement like that comes back to haunt us all, it came from Ahok’s mouth at first, we have to remember that from there,” he added.

Ahok’s statement in question was about his speech quoting Al Maidah’s letter in 2016. At that time Ahok’s statement quoting Al Maidah’s verse 51 was considered an insult to Islam.

Gus Choi said those who often stigmatize Anies as a proponent of identity politics never highlighted Ahok’s controversial statement. In fact, Ahok was jailed because of his statement.

The North Jakarta District Court jury sentenced Ahok to two years in prison as he was found guilty of blasphemy over his statement regarding Surat Al-Maidah 51.

“Don’t use this as an inappropriate beating for Anies. Eh, you are identity politics. Because this happened because of Ahok. Meanwhile, those who go to jail seem free, never talk about it again. more targeted. Even if it came from here,” he said.

Gus Choi denied that Anies Baswedan was thought to frequently use identity politics. For him, Anies is a victim of the frame, so he is often cornered.

“There are those who call Anies the father of all kinds of identities, i.e. the framing that ends up lying to people and also slandering in my opinion,” he said.
