The coffins, in which the dead were taken to cremation in Poland, were not burned, but were returned to Lithuania, where they were sold again. There is evidence that LPC employees erased the names of people written on the coffin lids for cremation in Poland with acetone.
Employees say the resale of the coffins has continued for about three years.
Evidence gathered by the LRT shows that people in Lithuania paid 300-1000 euros for a coffin, but the corpses were moved to cardboard coffins before the cremation, which cost no more than 16 euros.
It is estimated that last year alone, LPC earned at least € 45,000 in such fraud. The management of the company insists that the returned coffins were restored, however, LRT revealed that only four coffins were restored, but up to 150 coffins were returned to the market.
The Vilnius Archdiocese Curriculum LRT informed that LPC has already contacted people who did not receive the required amount of services.
LPC’s representatives stated that they were convinced that the parties were aware of the changes in the rules of the crematorium in the Polish city of Suwalki, but that the employees continued to sell coffins that were not suitable for cremation, so they were brought back from the crematorium. The coffins were then repainted and resold, but the company claims that this only happened once with each coffin.
