The Mystery of the Great Lakes in Antarctica Suddenly Disappeared

Jakarta

In 2019, a strange phenomenon occurred in Antartika. A huge lake in the South Pole ice sheet disappeared in just three days. Further investigation by scientists uncovered the cause of the mystery.

Initially, no one detected the oddity until Dr Roland Warner as a glacier expert from the University of Tasmania, Australia, found out after looking at satellite images.

After conducting investigations, he and other scientists concluded that there was something rare, namely hydrofracture, as the cause of the disappearance of the lake in a very short time.

“We believe a large crack opened momentarily in the ice sheet and drained all of the lake water into the ocean within three days,” Warner was quoted as saying. detikINET from CTV News.

“This lake holds water bigger than Sydney harbor and the flow into the ocean below is swift like the flow at Niagara Falls so it was an impressive sight,” he added.

The phenomenon of hydrofracture occurs when the pressure of liquid water on top of the ice sheet causes it to split because the water is denser. Actually the ice sheet at that lake location in the Amery Ice Shield is one of the densest in Antartika, 1,400 meters thick. Then this crack is something that rarely happens.

According to researchers, it is possible that the lake will be filled with water again in the future. It is also possible that the water will disappear again due to hydrofracture.

These events are not directly correlated with climate change or global warming. However, melting or cracking of the ice sheet in Antartika could accelerate the process of rising sea levels in the future.
