WASHINGTON – Storm giants on Saturn that envelop the entire planet for many months is still a mystery. New research shows the impact of giant storms on the planet Saturn could last hundreds of years.
Such terrible violent storms are common in Saturn . Even the thunderstorms that were so violent formed a dark outline enveloping the entire planet.
The most recent storm hit in December 2010, while NASA’s Cassini spacecraft was orbiting the planet. The Cassini spacecraft takes a front row view of the massive storm that lasted 200 days.
According to recent radio telescope scans, the continuing effects of the massive storm that erupted on Saturn more than 100 years ago are still visible in the planet’s atmosphere today. The great storm left persistent chemical anomalies that are still a mystery that scientists have not been able to solve.
A huge storm, known as the “Great White Spot,” erupts every 20 or 30 years in Saturn’s northern hemisphere and rages non-stop for months. Astronomers have seen six of these planet-sized storms hit Saturn since 1876.
In other words, long after the giant storms have disappeared from view, their impact on Saturn’s weather lasts for centuries. “For most of the time, Saturn’s atmosphere looks hazy,” wrote researchers in a study published in the journal Science Advances on August 11, quoted by SINDOnews from the Live Science page, Tuesday (15/8/2023).
Using the Very Large Array radio telescope in New Mexico, researchers peered through the haze of Saturn’s upper atmosphere, hoping to find chemical remnants from the giant storm that occurred in 2010. In fact, the team found traces of all six giant storms, the earliest recorded to hit more from 130 years ago.
