The Mystery of Kim Jong Un’s Foldable Mobile Phone: Speculations and Smuggled Technology

When North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week oversaw the launch of a new long-range ballistic missile, seen in front of him on a foldable mobile phone table, it quickly became the subject of much speculation.

The pictures published, on Thursday, by the official North Korean newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, show a silver-colored foldable mobile phone that was placed in a black leather case, which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Pocket S model made by Chinese Huawei.

The photos date back to Wednesday, when a new long-range intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from Pyongyang, which sparked a lot of comments and speculation about the source of this smartphone and how it got to North Korea.

The South Korean newspaper “Joongang Ilbo” wrote, “If the object that appeared in the picture was a foldable smartphone, it is likely that it was secretly entered and smuggled into North Korea from China.”

Under international sanctions against North Korea, the country cannot import or export electronic equipment.

Kim Jong Un is known for his great interest in electronic devices. He is often photographed with products from the American company Apple, including MacBook computers and iPad tablets.

Barely 19 percent of North Koreans seem to have access to a mobile phone, according to data provided by the CIA.
