More than 100 alumni from the same high school have been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Investigations are still ongoing but it is suspected that the uranium-contaminated soil at the school made them sick.
The alumni, who all attended Colonia High School in Woodbridge, New Jersey, developed ‘rare’ glioblastoma years after studying or working there.
This case came to light after one of the alumni, Al Lupiano, found a connection that he, his wife, and his sister had the same disease. All three of them are alumni of Colonia High School.
Quoted from Daily Mail, Saturday (30/4/2022), Al Lupiano revealed that he had a brain tumor 20 years ago, before his wife had one and so did his sister, who died in February aged 44. The 50-year-old claims the disease can be traced back to a nearby sampling plant that dealt with uranium for the first atomic bomb under the Manhattan Project.
He vowed to reveal the cause of his illness, adding: ‘I will not rest until I have an answer’.
Glioblastoma or glioblastoma multiforme is a type of malignant brain tumor that attacks the brain or spinal cord.
The tumor is formed from astrocyte cells that function to support the work of nerve cells. Glioblastomas can appear at any age, however, they are more common in older people.
