KOMPAS.com – The 2,000-year-old mechanical device that is often referred to as the world’s oldest “computer” has been reinvented by scientists trying to understand how it works.
The Antikythera device has stunned experts since it was discovered in a Roman-era shipwreck in Greece in 1901.

However, only a third of the devices remained undamaged, leading researchers to think about how they worked and what they looked like.

The back of the device had been solved in previous research, but the complex front gear system remains a mystery.
Scientists from University College London (UCL) believe they will finally be able to solve the puzzle using three-dimensional computer modeling.
They are reinventing the entire front panel, and are currently hoping to reconstruct the Antikythera clone at full scale using modern materials.
On Friday, a paper published in Scientific Reports revealed a new look at the gear system showing fine detail and intricate parts.
“The sun, moon and planets are displayed in a scintillating masterpiece of brilliance ancient Greek, “said the paper’s lead author, Professor Tony Freeth.
“Our work is the first model that fits all physical evidence and matches the description in the scientific inscription engraved on the instrument itself,” he added.
The 2,000 -year -old device is described as the world’s first astronomical calculator and analog computer.
It was made of bronze and had dozens of gears in it.

The rear cover features a description of the cosmic appearance, showing the known movements of the five planets when the device was built.
But only 82 pieces – about a third of the tool’s overall set – survived the damage.
This means scientists have to collect the complete image using X-ray data and mathematical methods from ancient Greece.
