SANAA – Barhout well in the east wealth which is known as “ Hell’s Well ” is actually one of the wonders of nature shrouded in mystery and tales of an evil ghost. The well of Barhout is 1,300 km from the capital city of Sanaa, right in the desert of Al-Mahra province.
The Barhout well is 30 meters wide and estimated to be between 100 and 250 meters deep. For centuries, sinister legends have circulated around Barhout’s Well. That said, visiting or even talking about it can bring bad luck.
There is even a legend that says the Barhout well is a prison for uncontrolled jinn. This genie, according to legend, would take the head of anyone who dared (or was stupid) to go downstairs.
Salah Babhair, director general of the Geological Survey and the Mahra Mineral Resources Authority, said he did not know what was under Barhout’s well. Moreover, sunlight reaches deep into the structure of the well so that only a few parts can be seen.
“It’s so deep, we have never reached the bottom of this well, because there is very little oxygen and no ventilation. We have entered the well reaching more than 50-60 meters and smelled something strange and mysterious,” he said as quoted by SINDOnews from the Phys page, Saturday (29/7/2023).
The Oman Cave Exploration Team (OCET) is the first documented team to explore the 367-foot (112-meter) deep hole. The first expedition to the bottom of Barhout’s shocking well found a miracle, but something natural.
Geologist and cavers Mohammad Al-Kindi and the team in total spent about four to five hours exploring the bottom of the Barhout well. “There are many beautiful cave deposits,” said Al-Kindi, quoted by SINDOnews from the Atlasobscura website.
