CAIRO – In Greek mythology Aspidochelone believe there are giant turtles and whales whose back resembles an island.

The mysterious island formed in the animal’s body contains wild forests and rocks called Aspidochelone, which is still unsolved to this day.

However, according to the Greek Physiologus tradition, Aspidochelone is a sea creature that has several descriptions, namely in the form of a whale or a turtle and even a crab the size of an island.

Quoting Live Science, the figure of Hafgufa is actually a whale that is hunting and setting traps by opening its mouth wide.

“I was reading up on some Norse mythology and noticed this creature, which is similar to the feeding behavior of a whale. Once we started investigating further, we saw the parallels were striking,” said John McCarthy, a maritime archaeologist in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University in Australia.

This feeding behavior is usually seen in two types of whales, namely humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and Bryde whales (Balaenoptera brydei). They usually wait with their mouths wide open in an upright, motionless position at the surface of the water.

The schools of unsuspecting fish then regard the gaping jaws as shelter and swim straight into the deadly trap.
