The Mysterious Dyatlov Pass Incident: A Case of Hypothermia or Something More Sinister?

Moscow : Six decades ago, in 1959, nine men from the Ural Polytechnic Institute in Soviet Russia set out on a hike to Otorten Peak in the Ural Mountains region. They were excellent hikers and were never seen alive by the outside world.

One of the most mysterious events in history is known as the ‘Dyatlov Pass Incident’.

Igor Dyatlov (23), Yuri Krivonyshenko (23), Yuri Doroshenko (21), Zinaida Kolmogorova (22), Rustem Slobodin (23), Lyudmila Dubinina (20), Alexander Kolevatov (24), Nikolay Vladimirovich (23) ), Alexander Solotaryov (38) bodies were found under mysterious circumstances.

The actual cause of their death was not clear. The Soviet government quickly closed the case. The government said that the cause of death was ‘hypothermia’, a condition in which the body temperature drops too much, and adverse natural conditions such as an avalanche may have led to this.

However, most were not satisfied with these explanations. The government kept the details of the case top secret for years. This added to the mystery. Stories were later linked to their deaths, ranging from secret Soviet weapons testing to strange creatures

What happened…

The group left in January 1959. By 1 February they had reached the pass leading to Otorten (named after the disaster the Dyatlov Pass). They got lost in heavy snowfall and reached a mountain valley called ‘Kholat Syakhl’ or Dead Mountain by the local Mansi people.

There they pitched tents and stayed. No one knows what happened to them later. On February 20, the military and police started a search for the group. On February 26, their tents were found torn from the inside with a knife. The contents of the tent were scattered. Meanwhile, the army saw footprints covered in snow.

They were human footprints without shoes. After following these for about a mile, five dead bodies were found near the forest. The bodies of four others were found in the snow two months later. The investigation team made clues from the cameras and diaries found in their tents.

Evidence

The bodies of Krivonishenko and Doroshenko have only a few clothes. With temperatures ranging from -13 to -22 degrees Fahrenheit, no one goes outside without heavy clothing

Signs of a nearby fire

Doroshenko’s body is brown-purple in color. Gray fluid was also found in the mouth

📌 Signs that they tried to escape from something and climb on top of the nearby trees

One lost both his eyes and another lost his tongue

Some bodies have broken bones as if they were hit by a car

One’s skull was broken

Radioactive presence in clothes of two people

There is no sign of avalanche in the region

It is believed that the accident happened at night on the day the tent was pitched

They may have run away from the tent in fear

It is clear that all the nine experienced hypothermia

Rumors

1. Some have alleged that Soviet officials or KGB spies were behind the incident. It is argued that there may have been a secret test of some kind of weapon and that the nine could have been killed because they saw it.

On the night of the incident, another hiking group who was 50 km away from the accident site revealed that they saw a strange orange light in the sky. A camera obtained by the police also has a blurry image of orbs of light in the sky.

2. Rumor has it that a strange creature called Menk, believed to live in the Russian mountains like the Himalayan Yeti, may be behind the death.

3. The question arose whether the Mansi tribesmen might have attacked the group. However, they do not attack outsiders. There was no sign of an attack at the accident site

📌 Investigation conclusion

In 2019, the Russian government reopened the case. The Katti case was closed in July 2020, stating that there was no criminal nature and that the cause of death was hypothermia caused by natural phenomena such as avalanches, snow fall and storms.
