The Mysterious Disappearance of Michael Schumacher: A Decade of Silence on His Health and Recovery

The legendary German racing driver Michael Schumacher literally disappeared from public view 10 years ago. Since the skiing incident in December 2013 in which he suffered severe head injuries, there has been absolutely no news about his health and the only thing the public knows is that the 54-year-old king of Formula One is still alive.

The seven-time F1 champion’s health has been kept a secret by his family since the incident. There have been few updates, such as the fact that after the tragedy he was placed in an induced coma until 2014, after which Schumacher was transferred from Grenoble hospital to his home, where he continues to rehabilitate and receive treatment to this day.

Netflix has a documentary on Schumacher in which motorsport official Jean Todt revealed that the two even watched F1 shows together after the incident, while Schumacher’s wife Corinne revealed that “Michael is here, just different”.

Hiding Schumacher’s health from public discussion is a conscious family decision. The lawyer of the legendary racing driver, Felix Damm, explained why the Schumacher family wanted it.

It has always been about privacy. Of course, we have thought about whether to announce his final health status and whether it would be appropriate to do so.

“But it wouldn’t end there,” Dam explained to the German media LTO. “In that case, we should keep updating the public information about his health because the media would ask again and again. I’m amazed at how much false information the media publishes. It even went so far that one of them just thought of publishing an AI-generated ‘interview’ and put it on the cover. I believe most fans understand and respect Michael’s privacy, which will continue to be respected.”

Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the most successful F1 drivers of all time with seven trophies each. Schumacher is most vividly associated with “Ferrari” by motorsport fans, because in this team he demonstrated absolute dominance in formula races.
