The Mysterious Death of Oppenheimer: Throat Cancer and the Legacy of the Atomic Bomb

Jakarta

Oppenheimer became a hot topic of conversation after the film made by Christopher Nolan was shown in Indonesia. The life story of the ‘father of the atomic bomb’ is in the spotlight because of his findings which became weapons of mass murder.

Despite his controversy over the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer died at the age of 62. The cause of his death, contradicted the devastating power of the atomic bomb he helped create.

Oppenheimer died in 1967 after battling throat cancer. The trigger for the malignant disease was mentioned because of his severe smoking habit.

He is said to have been a heavy smoker since his youth, a habit which led to bouts of tuberculosis and most likely led to his diagnosis of throat cancer in late 1965.

Page Dexerto writes Oppenheimer had surgery, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy, but unfortunately all this was not successful, and he fell into a coma before he died in 1967, his death marked the loss of one of the most important figures in modern science.

Quoted from National Health Service (NHS), alcohol and tobacco are the two main things that can increase a person’s risk of throat cancer. Both are thought to trigger exposure to chemicals that damage throat cells.

Symptoms of throat cancer that can appear include:

A lump in the neck Sore throat or cough that lasts a long time Difficulty swallowing Bad breath Weight loss drastically without dieting Voice starts hoarseness Spitting or coughing up blood Pain in the ear or frequent ear infections Hearing loss Numbness in the face Headache Swelling or lump in the neck or throat
