The mysterious cyclone at Jupiter’s pole confuses scientists

Scientists speak of mysterious cyclones at Jupiter’s poles

Jupiter is a giant planet of the Solar System. Unlike Earth, Jupiter is a planet made up of gas.

It turns out that Jupiter has an amazing phenomenon, namely a large cyclone. The cyclone is a polygon and is located at the north and south poles of the giant planet.

The cyclone was first identified thanks to the Juno spacecraft in 2017. Since then, there has been no visible difference in the shape of Jupiter’s cyclone.

The shape of the great cyclone is a strange but beautiful geometric shape. This leaves scientists confused as to how Jupiter maintains their cyclonic shape.

Very large size

If you look only from the photo, it is true that this cyclone with a polygonal pattern appears to have a normal size. However, the original Jupiter cyclone is very large.

In comparison, Jupiter’s two cyclones are the size of the continental United States on Earth.

Did recent research reveal everything?

Now a research team led by Andrew P. Ingersoll of the California Institute of Technology has revealed what really happens to cyclones on the largest planet in the Solar System.

They found that there appeared to be an “anticyclonic ring” between the two cyclones. Hence, smaller cyclones will keep them in a polygonal pattern with respect to them.

Even so, there are still many unanswered questions about this mysterious cyclone. According to the latest study, the Juno spacecraft has been observing the cyclone ever since.

These observations show that the cyclone at Jupiter’s north pole is surrounded by 8 smaller cyclones that form a polygonal pattern.

However, it is still unclear why the formation or pattern is still stable until now. The polygon model rotates slowly or does not rotate at all.

Previously, the researchers used a series of images captured by Juno’s Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper in Juneau to track the two cyclones.
