The Mysterious Christian Dior Dress of Elizabeth Taylor: The Lucky Charm of an Oscar-Winning Actress

After receiving the coveted statuette, the actress considered this outfit her talisman and kept it with her while traveling for many years.

An actress Elizabeth Taylor went down in history as a performer of the role of Cleopatra, a lover of luxurious jewelry, and also as one of the main fashionistas of Hollywood. Throughout her long career, her wardrobe included outfits from the most famous designers, exclusive and couture. However, one of the most mysterious outfits of this legendary woman was a dress from Christian Dior.

The outfit was created by the brand for the spring-summer 1961 Haute Couture collection, and it was called Soiree a Rio. That collection marked the start of legendary designer Marc Bohan’s career at Dior and featured the Slim Look, a new take on the iconic Dior silhouette New Look. When Taylor saw the collection, she simply fell in love with it and immediately ordered 12 outfits, this dress being one of them.

When Elizabeth put on this dress, it instantly went down in history, because she appeared in it at the Oscars. That evening, the actress received a gold statuette in the “Best Actress” category.

The star’s couture dress was made in two colors – the top top was a soft light green shade, and the skirt was white and tulip-shaped. The waist of the outfit was clearly defined, and it was also decorated with a wide green belt and a crimson flower made of fabric. On one side, the skirt was decorated with satin stitch embroidery in the form of flowers and small beetles.

The top was made of thin chiffon and underneath showed a corset with a sweetheart neckline and strapless.

Elizabeth wore her Oscar night outfit with high white gloves and chandelier earrings with diamonds and pearls from the Ruser brand. However, the dress was not seen in public after the ceremony and was discovered only recently.

It turns out that for more than 50 years, the dress created by Mark Bohan for Christian Dior was stored in central London. Carefully packaged, it was kept in a large plastic suitcase along with 11 other items of clothing from the late star. This became known thanks to the auction house Kerry Taylorwho said in a statement that he was putting the outfit up for sale.

According to representatives of the auction, the dress came to them thanks to the family of Gaston and Anne Sanz – former employees and close friends of Taylor. Gaston Sanz had worked for Elizabeth Taylor since the 1950s and was one of her trusted employees. The man worked for the movie star for many years and was her bodyguard and driver, and Taylor and her then-husband Richard Burton baptized their daughter with Anne.

The family contacted the auction house in an attempt to sell the outfit, and Anne also said that Taylor called it her “lucky charm” after winning an Oscar in 1961, and although it was only worn to the awards ceremony, she took it with her. traveling for another 10 years. However, somehow tired of folding a huge amount of her things and transporting them from place to place, the actress simply called Anne to her hotel room in the Dorchester and told her to choose everything she wanted. So the woman chose outfits from the star’s wardrobe and put them in two suitcases. Over the years, Sans had only worn a couple of dresses and given the rest away to friends and family, never considering them particularly meaningful or valuable. She kept her lucky dress in a large plastic suitcase. The outfits were preserved in excellent condition, because no one had worn them all this time.

As a result, they expect to receive from 75-125 thousand dollars for the Dior Kerry Taylor dress. The auction will take place on December 12.
