The Mysterious and Tragic Story of the Learjet 35 Flight Carrying Payne Stewart and 5 Others

The Learjet 35, registered as N47BA, was a small private aircraft carrying 6 people along with two pilots

This mysterious and tragic story happened on October 25, 1999, when a plane flew around the United States for almost four hours and almost crossed the border into Canada, while everyone in its cabin was either unconscious or dead.

The Learjet 35, registered as N47BA, was a small private aircraft carrying 6 people along with two pilots. Among the passengers were PGA legend Payne Stewart, former football quarterback Robert Fraley, golf agency president Stewart Van Arden and Bruce Borland, golf course architect for the Jack Nicklaus company, IFLScience reported. Michael Kling and Stephanie Belgarig were in the cockpit. It is known that they took off from Orlando, Florida and were supposed to land in Dallas, Texas.

Note that this flight was private and was not supposed to last more than three hours. However, just 6 minutes after takeoff, something went wrong. The aircraft took off without incident and began climbing to an approved altitude of 11,900 meters. At an altitude of 7,000 meters, the pilot contacted and said that everything was fine, but that was the last contact that could be made with the board, Glasnews.bg specifies.

After 6 minutes, the operators made another attempt to contact the plane, but without success. Several subsequent attempts also failed, and so the US Air Force intervened in the situation. An F-16 appears nearby, having flown to intercept for a visual inspection.

At the time, Colonel Olson, who was at the helm of the F-16, found no visible damage to the aircraft and reported that the board was on a direct course, but could not look inside the cockpit as the windows were not clear – they appeared to be covered with condensation or ice.

It is assumed that the Pentagon and the Canadian authorities were ready to liquidate the plane so that it would not crash into a populated place. However, this claim was eventually disputed and it was stated that this was not an option.

N47BA only had fuel on board for a 4.5 hour flight and so it soon ran out and the aircraft began to spiral down. Witnesses to the disaster claim that it was completely out of control and hurtled towards the ground at almost supersonic speed. The plane eventually crashed on a flat surface in South Dakota, resulting in the complete destruction of the plane itself and a huge funnel on the ground.

What actually happened? After examining the plane’s black boxes, investigators believe the cabin was depressurized a few minutes after the last communication session. Alas, experts still do not understand how and how quickly this happened. However, the crew and passengers did not receive enough supplemental oxygen and as a result lost consciousness due to hypoxia.

It should be noted that with rapid or gradual depressurization of the cabin, people on board experience cognitive impairment and lose consciousness due to a decrease in the level of oxygen in the cabin. It probably incapacitated the pilots. Until the plane ran out of fuel, the autopilot maintained altitude and a straight course, but then it became impossible.

To this day, experts have not been able to solve the mystery of the depressurization of the plane, but the recordings from the black box show that in the last minutes and even hours of the flight, no one was awake in the cabin. It is possible that all crew members were unconscious or died shortly after last contact.
