Myanmar’s military is halting attacks on areas controlled by security forces, the UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar said in a new report. In the villages there are headaches, gang rape and torture. According to the UN, the victims include women, children and the elderly.

Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews reports that Myanmar’s junta is responding to the attacks lose the ground to various resistance groups. For example, the military recently lost control of an important trade route.

‘Unforeseen Crisis’

Furthermore, Andrews describes the situation in Myanmar as “an unforeseen emergency“because the world’s attention is focused on other countries. It opposes countries that support the military regime.

Andrews does not mention the names of countries that support the regime. He praises the US for imposing sanctions and Singapore for cracking down on weapons shipments, although he says it’s sad that more countries don’t act like this.

Myanmar has been torn apart by violence since 2021. The army seized power in February of that year and ousted the elected leader of the government, Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, there has been a bloody battle between the junta and various security groups.
