The Mutual Services Blood Bank wants to donate platelets

The executive director of the Administration of Medical Services (ASEM), Jorge Matta González, called on regular donors and the general public on Wednesday to donate platelets of each blood group, for the benefit of cancer patients, people who are undergoing surgeries complex and those with coagulation disorders. .

“Platelet donation can save between one and three lives, but it has to be an ongoing process because of their short lifespan. “Platelets cannot be removed artificially, and can make the difference between life and death for many patients.”expressed Matta González in written statements.

The medical director of ASEM, Israel Ayala Oliveras, pointed out that platelets are essential for coagulation and the prevention of bleeding, especially in patients who receive chemotherapy, transplants, or who suffer from serious accidents. He explained that plates last only five days, which requires a constant supply of donations.

Donations are made through a special apheresis procedure, which lasts 90 minutes to two hours. Those interested in donating plates must be between 21 and 70 years old, weigh more than 130 pounds, and be in good health. Additionally, appointments can be made by calling (787) 777-3844 or writing to citasbancosangre@asem.pr.gov.
