The musicians of the Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra “invite” us home

When the schools were closed, the municipality contacted the various cultural services: libraries, conservatory, orchestra … to ask them to think about actions aimed at children. Within the Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra, several musicians, including Clément Schildt, violist who also takes care of digital communication, and David Zuccolo, violinist who also works in programming, had the idea of offering to Mulhousians videos allowing them to better know the musicians and see how they work at home. “The idea was taken up by Guillaume Hébert, the director general, who sent an email to all members of the orchestra,” said David Zuccolo.

“We wanted to show our daily life and our little secrets,” adds Clément Schildt. In the first video in a series called: The OSM, like at home, he explained the difference between the viola and the violin, as well as how to get the notes right. Caroline Drouin, violinist, explained how she works without disturbing the neighbors, using an electric violin. In a third video, François Fouquet, who plays the oboe and the English horn, shows the astonishing manual skills that must be demonstrated by those who practice these instruments to make the double hip themselves, this small room in which they blow.

“Not just musicians dressed in tailcoats”

“The videos work very well,” continues Clément Schildt. “The first post on Facebook was viewed more than 20,000 times and the video was viewed 9,000 times. This is unusual for a video with content that is quite “intellectual” and with precise explanations. There are a lot of comments, sharing and all the feedback is very positive. The local side is undoubtedly appreciated. The OSM is the Mulhouse orchestra. And the public sees in these videos that we are normal, not just musicians dressed in tail coats. “

Working at home is nothing new for OSM members. “We are used to this discipline to work our technical level on our instruments all year round,” said David Zuccolo. “Confinement allows us to work more, to immerse ourselves in rooms that we don’t usually have time to see or discover new ones. This is the bright side of this situation. But we lack the orchestral mass. It has a frustrating side. “

David Zuccolo, violinist, is still thinking about the content of his video. DR

A “good child” style but not “ultra amateur”

The violinist has not yet produced a video. “I would like to do something original. I think about the content. Then I will send it to Clement for editing. After being filmed with their smartphone or a camera if they have one, the musicians actually send their video to the violist who centralizes the upload. “I learned editing on the job. I’m trying to do something dynamic, “he explains. The style remains good child but Clément Schildt tries that it is not too “ultra amateur”. “The explanations must also be of good quality. And if we don’t play well, it’s not good for our image. “

In addition to this series, the OSM also offers another program called the musical minute. These two proposals also allow musicians to find a purpose in their work. “Among us, a couple, one of whom is a violinist and the other double bassist, prepared a duet, worked it together and recorded it. Preparing a video motivated them. It’s true that time gives us the opportunity to have fun with scores that we worked on when we were students. But our life is playing in public. With confinement, we are like lions in cages. “

SURFING All OSM videos are online on the Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra Facebook page. For the OSM, as at home, Clément Schildt advises to view them preferably on the orchestra’s YouTube channel, where the quality is better.
