The musical ‘Voice from the Beletage’ dedicated to women’s rights will premiere

In Melluži, Sigulda, Rīga and Matīši, the contemporary original musical “Voice from the Beletage” will have its premiere this week, the portal “Delfi” was informed by the musical maker Maija Treile. The work on women’s rights has been created by a team of innovative but already acclaimed artists. The authors, choreographers and performers of the production idea – Inta Balode, Agate Bankava, and Agnese Bordjukova – are nominees and laureates of several Dance Awards, meanwhile the musician Plato Buravickis is one of the most sought-after composers of academic, experimental music.

English suffrage Emilija Davison, Latvian composer Felicita Thomsone and plays “Blow, winds!” The protagonist Barba in the show becomes an archetypal image, which helps to reveal the current issue of gender equality. Choreographer Agate Bankava admits that the biggest challenge in working on the show was “the different faces of women in society – getting to know and identifying them”. On the other hand, as the most important aspect, she highlights the importance of talking about a woman’s voice at a time when women themselves tend to question it. Inta Balode joins him: “It is a challenge for me to understand what I think about the issues of a woman’s voice. Its shadow of the patriarch is probably so strong that it is difficult to even think quietly where to talk from.”

Composer Plato Buravicki says that the topic of gender equality is close to him: “Few people talk about it. And if someone starts talking, sometimes they perceive it aggressively. Maybe we will understand it better with our way of” speaking “…”

In the message of the performance, the views wandering in the modern information space, scientific and pseudo-scientific statements are intertwined with the texts of archive protocols, old newspaper articles and fragments of Rainis’ play. At the same time, the new work reflects on the rules of the musical genre and seeks directions for its development, both musically and choreographically.

Composer Plato Buravickis admits that working with the libretto was a challenge: “Every page had to look for new solutions, creative team discussions helped a lot, illustrative material. I gained a lot of new experience even in using computer programs, which I think I knew.”

The road to the premiere was quite long, the idea came before the Covid-19 pandemic, much of the rehearsal process took place remotely. However, one of the authors of the idea, Inta Balode, sees the long process of creation not as a burden, but as a significant plus: “The most important was the long and exciting co-creation process, enjoying the loss of hierarchy and one-person authorship in such processes.”

August 24 at 18.00 in Melluži stage park.
August 25 at 19.00 in the yard of the cultural center “Siguldas devons” (Pils street 10, Sigulda).
August 26 at 21.00 in “Viskaļi”, art center “Totaldobže” concert hall (Viskaļu street 36, Riga) within the framework of “Viskaļu Contemporary Art Festival”.
August 27 at 20.00 Matīši stage.

The choreography and performance consists of Inta Balode, Agate Bankava, and Agnese Bordjukova, the author of the music is Plato Buravickis, the playwright Maija Treile and the choreographers. The set design and costumes were created by Elīna Valdmane. Musicians Anna Gāgane (clarinet), Aigars Raumanis (saxophone), Kārlis Rērihs (horn), Laura Grecka (mezzo-soprano) and Monta Martinsone (soprano) participate in the performance.
