The Mushwood project recovers waste from the mushroom sector in La Rioja

LOGROO, 19 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Riojan company ‘SOLTECO’ is developing a European project for the recovery of material from the mushroom sector. This program contemplates the collection of rejected material generated in its cultivation to produce reusable pallots in the sector. This project, called Mush-wood, has the support of the Government of La Rioja, the European Union and the Government of Spain. The objective is to generate recovery actions with disposable plastics in La Rioja.

The MUSHWOOD project aims to solve the problems of managing plastic agricultural waste generated in the cultivation of mushrooms, while providing new recycled materials for use in the agri-food sector.

The collection of plastic waste from ASOCHAMP members is centralized at the mushroom recycling facilities located in Pradejn (La Rioja), managed by Sustratos de La Rioja, where it is pressed and accumulated.

For Jos Vicente Sainz, CEO of SOLTECO “non-recyclable plastics from mushroom production can be given a second use to reuse them. We will thus recover plastic waste to produce a sustainable and recycled material.”

The CEO of SOLTECO has added that “we have agreements with Autol, Ausejo and Pradejn for the revaluation of their plastic waste in the cultivation of mushrooms, through a circular economy model”.

The program is carried out through the European agricultural fund for rural development, with European investment in rural areas. The consortium that carries it out is made up of the Mushroom Technology Center (CTICH), the Association of Mushroom Producers (ASOCHAMP), SOLTECO, plastic waste transformer manager, and GAP as a technological partner.

On the other hand, the company SOLTECO continues to develop the European project COSTAS, granted by the CDTI. The objective is to recover the plastics from the Mediterranean Sea to be able to give them a second use in rafts in Galicia and recover the environment.
