The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design has long had the idea of making documentaries on the most important figures in Latvian design at heart. Film professionals – Māris Maskalāns and Agne Skane – responded to this idea and, as a result, the first three short films were made about the pioneers of Latvian design – Valdi Celma, Artūras Riņkis and Jānis Borga.
Valdis Celms says: “I have already been asked for interviews, and whenever it is a single object, event, here I would have to concentrate and try to give an overview of so many years, themes that I have addressed. , both art and kinetics, as well as various photo collages, environmental issues and similar misconceptions about the artist’s place in society. “
On the other hand, artist Artūrs Rinkis reveals: “I praised Agni right after seeing the footage of the film, when it was 70% shot, she sent it to me, and I called her and thanked her madly and I expressed deep, profound excitement about his work: such short, but very precise points connected. “
Inese Baranovska, head of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, says of the idea: “I always follow how such large and diverse museums worked. We really set foot in new shoes and learned. But the fact that such a vivid narrative, people specific, their experiences – which is such a valuable format, it is certain, because in a written text, moreover, in this digital age, people are very receptive to its visual image and also to its content “.
In the film, the conversations with the artists serve not only as documentary evidence of the era, but also as a poetic journey into their memories, dreams and ideals.
From 4 November, the short films can also be seen at the Latvian National Museum of Art in the “Youtube” account.. Over time others will join them too, but what the next “Design Stories” will be about, the museum wants to keep a secret.
