the murder: – One question becomes crucial

When Makaveli Lindén (22) enters courtroom 207 on Monday morning, it is the start of the end for a two-year murder case. On the morning of October 15, 2018, he entered a collective at Majorstua in Oslo, looking for valuables.

Of the four who lived in the collective in Arbos gate, only Heikki Bjørklund Paltto was at home. After a short time, the 24-year-old was stabbed 45 times and killed.

One topic in particular will be central during the five-day trial – Swedish Lindén’s mental state when the murder took place.

Listen to Dagbladet’s podcast Right on, about the murder at Majorstua below.

Psychotic state

– It appears from the indictment that the prosecution believes he has acted in a psychotic state and has therefore requested transfer to compulsory mental health care. This means that on the basis of the overall picture of evidence, we believe that it cannot be sufficiently proven that he was sane when he committed the criminal acts, says public prosecutor Trude Antonsen.

She confirms that experts have been appointed who will shed light on Lindén’s psyche. In addition to the 22-year-old’s explanation, there will also be explanations from witnesses about the discovery at the scene and what happened in the minutes before Heikki Bjørklund Paltto died.

– This will be highlighted by investigators, forensic technicians and the doctor who performed the autopsy, says Antonsen.

Past robbery becomes a topic

As recently as 2017, the year before the murder in the collective at Majorstua, Lindén was convicted of robbing several other people in a collective in his hometown Uppsala. As in Norway, a knife was also used here. However, no one was injured.

– How much will the defendant’s past, his life in Sweden and criminal history be the topic?

– Previous criminal history will be documented in the usual way. It is particularly important in relation to the reaction question, says Antonsen to Dagbladet.

Five days have been set aside for the trial in Oslo District Court. The public prosecutor says that Lindén’s confession of having committed the murder means that a relatively short time is set aside for the trial.

– Even if this is a murder case, there is no reason to take the presentation of evidence beyond what is considered necessary to shed light on the fact and the question of reaction. The defendant’s confession and explanation to the police has been important in relation to being able to limit the testimony, she says.

Defender agrees

Lindén’s defender, lawyer Øystein Storrvik, tells Dagbladet that his client’s mental health will be very central when the trial starts on Monday.

– We relate to the forensic psychiatric report, and believe he must be considered to have been insane at the time of the crime, Storrvik says to Dagbladet.
