The Murder of Alexei Petrov: A Landmark Attempt with Lingering Doubts

The murder of Alexei Petrov is another landmark attempt. There are doubts that it will remain in the “undisclosed” column.

“It is likely that this murder will fall into the column of unsolved crimes. Efforts should be made in the case and the investigations themselves should be fast so that there is a possibility of reaching the perpetrator and the surety. This is certainly a contract killing. The handwriting speaks for a professional hand, it is not an amateur act. A fairly well-organized crime. It is a matter of at least months of preparation, because it is clear that Aleksey Petrov’s habits were tracked and analyzed. He chose the right moment to pull the trigger,” said lawyer Dimitar Markovski in the studio of “Bulgaria ON AIR”.

According to him, the target was not Petrov’s companion and the emphasis was precisely on him. Markovski says that the shot itself suggests liquidation and the testimony of the lady is extremely important and decisive. She has already given descriptions of the perpetrator and his physique.

The lawyer believes that the bodyguards failed to fulfill their function, as they were at a very long distance from Alexey Petrov. The companion of the former beret called a couple of Ukrainians who were walking near the accident. The lawyer commented that they should be questioned first and then the security guards, as they were obviously much further away from the shooting.

“Alexei Petrov was a controversial person and had a lot of information about Bulgarian politicians. The directions of the investigation are not limited. It is being investigated from all directions – including the political one. This is the right way, and this is how the hand with the trigger will be reached. The murderer may also was transferred across the border. It may also be a matter of a person who is employed outside the borders of Bulgaria,” said Dimitar Markovski on Bulgaria ON AIR.

He also touched on the topic of the already released Ukrainian who carried out an unsuccessful attempt on Alexei Petrov in 2015.

“They can’t help but question this man, but it’s unlikely to be him. They won’t repeat the act with a person who failed. However, he was loyal to his employers, as the mastermind of this attempt was not caught. His alibi should also be checked,” he is emphatic.

Markowski said these are high-budget contract killings, and the person to be killed is always evaluated. According to him, Alexey Petrov is a high bar and it is at least a 6- or 7-figure sum. The guest appeals not to always demonize the security services, but nevertheless drew attention to Petrov’s media presence before he was killed.

“He predicted his end. He reported that he knew he was being followed. He underestimated this information because on the day in question it was a neglected walk. After all, he was a security instructor, it’s a bit paradoxical,” explained the lawyer.

At the end of the conversation, Markovski told how similar investigations are happening in other European countries.

“There are professionals in the services, and this type of crime is difficult to detect. Statistically, in the EU, the detection rate is slightly higher. Perhaps it is a matter of organization and resources. Bulgarian forensic scientists work in ugly conditions. There is a lack of well-prepared laboratories. The state must support these structures,” the guest is emphatic.
