The municipality of The Hague does not intend to introduce a general fireworks ban this year. Mayor Van Zanen writes this in a letter letter to the city council. There are plans for more fireworks-free zones in the city.
Last year there was a one-off national fireworks ban due to corona. In the coming years, fireworks will no longer be allowed in Rotterdam, just like in Amsterdam. The municipality of Utrecht is also working on a plan for a ban. Begin 2020 The cabinet has already decided to ban fireworks and flares. Lighter fireworks, such as ground flowers and fireworks fountains, are still allowed.
The municipality of The Hague does not intend to follow the example of the other major cities. A survey among residents showed that 48 percent are in favor of a fireworks ban and 41 percent against, the rest voted neutral. Four years ago, 52 percent were in favor and 38 percent against. Van Zanen writes that, in view of the results of the investigation, there are therefore no plans for an urban fireworks ban.
According to Van Zanen, a national ban is more effective: “An urban ban prohibits parting, but not sales. That makes enforcement of the ban more difficult.”
Bonfires are also allowed again
Bonfires should also be possible again next year. They could not continue for the past two years. Four permit applications have now been received and the municipality is positive about this, because it would prevent nuisance in the public space. However, the bonfires are subject to strict conditions to guarantee the safety of bystanders and local residents.
The latter has everything to do with the New Year’s Eve of 2018-2019. Then there was a shower of sparks near Scheveningen, causing fires in the area. That was because the bonfires were higher than allowed; the authorities knew about this but did not act for fear of disturbances.
Fireworks Free Zones
A lot more fireworks-free zones are being set up in the city. There should be a total of 53 at the turn of the year, thirty more than at the turn of the year 2019-2020. These zones will mainly be located around hospitals, petting zoos and animal shelters.
In addition, residents can declare a fireworks-free neighborhood on their own initiative if there is a need for this, writes Van Zanen.
