Would you like the Municipality of Rezé to create a local municipal police? This is the question that will be asked to residents on Sunday 2 October. They are invited to vote between 8:00 and 18:00 in their usual polling station. The municipality wants to recruit eight municipal officials dedicated to public peace by the end of their mandate. But will it be like today the mediators and / or ASVPs (public road surveillance agents) or municipal police officers, who will be able to apply more sanctions? The municipality leaves the choice to the inhabitants by organizing this local consultation.
The municipal police will not intervene in the thefts
By October 2nd four neighborhood meetings are organized to help people form a clear opinion. The next one will take place on Tuesday 13 September in the Houssais district. It is 6.30 pm in the great hall of the Castle of the Classerie. Another one follows, organized on Thursday 8 September at the socio-cultural center of Ragon. Obviously that evening the question of a municipal police force in Rezé is of interest. There aren’t enough chairs in the room for everyone. A resident, at the microphone, challenges the elect: “It’s not the town hall that will check the facies in the buildings, it’s absurd!” He is cheered by several people in the room.
Martine is not one of them. For her, there is too much insecurity in Rezé. Will vote for a municipal police: “I lived in the Château district, I moved because they burned my car, they threw alcohol at the car … Anyway, now we don’t need cowboys!” Not even the mayor, Agnès Bourgeais, wants it. She remembers it if a municipal police is created in Rezé, it will not be armed and will not intervene on theft or bargain points: “It is a local municipal police force that comes into contact with people and does not take the place of national police officers. There will therefore be no lethal weapon. We have always been very clear about this position.
It is not with a slightly different uniform that will change a lot!
On the other hand, what municipal police officers will do in relation to ASVPs is report speeding, noise pollution, illegal dumping of rubbish or even baggage checking during demonstrations. Leaving the meeting, Daniel is not convinced: “I don’t really see the point. It’s not because people have a slightly different uniform that is going to change a lot.”
What the Rezéen seem to want is above all more national police. For Cécile there is “lack of presence” in some neighborhoods. And she adds: “When we read articles in the press that tell us that Rezé is among the top 1 of burglaries, this does not reassure me. And I am sorry that it is up to our town hall to try to fill a gap in the state”.
