“The Mummy” landed at #6 of the most successful films of the year in 1999 – ahead of “Notting Hill”, “American Beauty” and “James Bond – The World Is Not Enough”. The silly, surprisingly scary adventure film is available on Prime Video, but only for a short time.
“The Mummy” by director Stephen Sommers (“Van Helsing”) can only be streamed on Amazon Prime Video at no additional cost* until March 22, 2024, after which the film will disappear from the flat rate subscription. Fortunately, there are alternatives. The 90s blockbuster can also be seen in the same location afterwards – just for a fee of a few euros. And of course it is still available as (4K/UltraHD) Blu-ray and DVD:

Indiana Jones had disappeared from the cinema screens for ten years after his last crusade, when Brendan Fraser took over as Rick O’Connell in 1999, although he was not a completely worthy successor to the legendary archaeologist. The cinema hit “The Mummy” was definitely a humorous adventure film. The formula of pseudo-historical nonsense, breathless treasure hunts and surprisingly grotesque peaks of violence perhaps doesn’t work as well here as in the best “Indiana Jones” films. But anyone who was a teenager back then didn’t have a new Indy flick to watch and instead went down to the grave with the CGI mummy.
Indy replacement for mummy fans and millennials
“The Mummy” got two more sequels before a new mummy film with Tom Cruise in the lead role was released into the world in 2017, but was largely ignored by the audience. Only the film from 1999 is really celebrated today. On YouTube, among the clips from “The Mummy,” there are many comments from people who remember how they saw the summer blockbuster as a teenager and learned to love it.
A new “The Mummy” adventure with Brendan Fraser? Director of the original films would be on board – under one condition
This very loose remake of the 1932 Boris Karloff horror classic didn’t fare particularly well with critics, but it is undoubtedly a special film: Shortly before “X-Men” and “Spider-Man” ushered in the dominance of superhero films, successfully revived the adventure cinema of the 1980s once again – albeit with computer effects that were real eye-catchers back then (and unfortunately have aged as poorly today as a non-mummified corpse).
This is the story of “The Mummy”
This would probably have happened to the clumsy Indiana Jones: American archaeologist Richard “Rick” O’Connell (Fraser) accidentally wakes up a high priest (Arnold Vosloo) who was cursed in ancient times while excavating in Egypt. He initially stumbles around as a decomposed corpse, but after sucking out several people he soon looks like he used to. Rick, his colleague Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) must now try to maneuver the angry and deadly mummy back into its grave.
