The MSF ship carries out a new rescue in the Mediterranean and already has more than 120 migrants on board

Ship ‘Geo Barents’, managed by Doctors Without Borders (MSF)

MADRID, 19 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The rescue ship ‘Geo Barents’, managed by the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF), rescued this Monday in the waters of the central Mediterranean 37 migrants and refugees who were trying to reach the coasts of southern Europe in a precarious boat, with which already has more than 120 people on board.

The migrants, “very weak”, have said that they had been at sea for at least four days. The head of MSF Rescue Operations, Juan Matías Gil, explained that it took about ten hours to reach the boat, since it was about 120 miles away from the ‘Geo Barents’.

On the other hand, a second person has been evacuated from this ship to a hospital in Malta due to his delicate state of health, since during the voyage he had suffered serious burns and “was on the verge of drowning in a mixture of water and gasoline.” . Gil explained that she was in a “critical” condition and that his life was in danger.

“It represents the very harsh condition faced by migrants seeking safety with a route that is far from safe,” he added. So far this year, nearly 150 people have died in the central Mediterranean area, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
