The MRF is complaining in the EU about Bulgaria because of Peevski and Magnitski

According to him, they take advantage of sanctions as “an instrument of over-repression and violation of human rights and freedoms.”

Ilhan Kyuchyuk refrained from naming affected individuals and companies, including former MRF MPs Delyan Peevski. However, the statement sounded like his defense.

He pointed out that the American law “Magnitsky” has no effect on the territory of the European Union, which contradicts the position of the United States that it is a global law (as it is called). The truth is that Bulgarians are the first EU citizens sanctioned under it.

According to Kyuchuk, the imposition of national sanctions by some EU countries as a continuation of US measures is “in gross contradiction with both their domestic law and Community law.” He pointed out that he was referring to Bulgaria, without naming other countries. The MEP called for a “misinterpretation of the European analogue” of the Magnitsky law in the same way. According to him, the sanctions should not become “an excessive punishment, without the guilt being proved by an independent judicial body after assessing all the facts and evidence”.
