The Movement for Freedom and Unity in Lebanon: Ibrahim Kanaan’s Insights on Democratic Discussions, Diversity of Opinions, and Accountability

Representative Ibrahim Kanaan affirmed that “the movement arose on the concept of freedom, and without it, we are invalid.” Those who are surprised by democratic discussions and the diversity of opinions within the “strong Lebanon bloc” are not accustomed to parties that include serious discussion, leading to the unity of the position in the final.

In response to a question why rumors haunt him, Kanaan replied: “Maybe because I am a lot of movement and troublemakers. The intense activity of the deputy and his continuous work in oversight, legislative and development, and on the side of the people, puts him in the spotlight, and generates gossip around him, and this is what happens with me.”

As for the message he sends to Representative Gebran Bassil, he said: “I see him every day, so I will not go to him on television. Our journey is long and will continue.”

In an interview with OTV today, Sunday, he continued, “The consensual system and the heresy of consensual democracy impede accountability, and there is a problem in the system that needs to be addressed.”

Regarding the result reached by the “Maarab Agreement”, he indicated that “many mistakes occurred, and I am not going to delve into them now, but experience has taught us that no agreement will last if it is left without evaluation and development, especially since it achieved a qualitative leap at the level of the Christian-Islamic partnership.”

Kanaan said, “I did not relinquish the financial accounts, and we did not settle them, and we insist on criminal scrutiny, parliamentary oversight, and accountability for the wrong financial, banking, and monetary policy that we alerted us of and worked to uncover and fix.”
