The mother of a 14-year-old boy accused of shooting at a school in Georgia last week warned the school and asked staff to check on her son before the shooting, US media reported.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with the Sept. 4 school shooting at Apalachee High School. Four died in the shooting and nine others were wounded. The boy is accused of four murders.

The contacts of the boy’s mother have been reported after the authorities brought charges against the boy’s father as well. Citing official sources, CNN reports that the father had bought the rifle for his son as a Christmas present last December.

Months earlier, in May 2023, the then 13-year-old boy had been questioned because he was believed to have written threats about a school shooting on the Internet.

The father is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and four counts of manslaughter. Second degree murder is equivalent to manslaughter in Finland.

The Washington Post says it obtained text messages sent by the boy’s mother to her sister, in which she says she asked the school staff to check on her son the same morning before the shooting.

“I told them it was an extreme emergency and they needed to find my son immediately and check on him,” the mother wrote in the messages.

The mother’s sister provided the text messages to the Washington Post. The mother later confirmed to the newspaper that she had sent the messages.

The text messages also show that the mother had already discussed her son’s mental health with the school a week earlier. According to the aunt, the 14-year-old boy had had “lethal and suicidal thoughts”.

CNN reported Sunday that the mother contacted the school after her son sent her a text message that read “I’m sorry.” The mother called the school about half an hour before the shooting started.

The Washington Post reports that a school staff member confused the students because another student at the high school had a similar name.
