Two years have passed from one of the most tragic episodes in the municipality of Los Alcázares: The cold drop in September 2019.
“Hoy por hoy Cartagena” has dedicated a large part of the program to DANA, which destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses in Alcazar, reaching losses of “more than 50,000 euros” for some merchants.
First thing in the morning, we are attended by Ana Cari Zapata, a neighbor whose family business that she has run for 48 years on the Paseo Real de la Feria de Los Alcázares, was destroyed. With her we will go through the so-called ‘Zone 0’, in which she tells us how they lived those two days of anguish and despair and the communication she maintained with her parents. Zapata chairs the Los Alcázares Merchants Association and has also spoken about the recovery of the sector since then.

“We take out buses to help in Los Alcázares.” Solidarity flooded the town of Alcazareño, thousands of volunteers from all over the Region of Murcia traveled to the municipality to help affected residents. We have testimonies from Jumilla, Murcia and Nonduermas, who recalled the hard times they lived through those days: “In the streets there was absolute silence”, “the neighbors shouted for help from their homes”.

Mario Pérez Cervera, mayor of Los Alcázares, remembers Dana excitedly: “It has marked a turning point in my political and personal life.” Pérez Cervera remembers the moments before dawn on September 13, when the neighbors called them “alarmists” for giving them advance notice of what was coming.

The mayor of Los Alcázares, during his interview in ‘Hoy por hoy Cartagena’, has stated what were his priorities for action and the most difficult moments. “I will never forget when thousands of alcazareños impregnated in mud fired the UME”.
“A before and after for our people.” Mario Cervera had to face the cold drop when two months ago he had taken the reins of the City Council. Actions and priorities those days; Los Alcázares, two years later.
