Prague – Zdeněk Hraba (ODS) won the most votes in the second round of this year’s elections to the upper parliamentary chamber, with 15,754 voters in the Benešov constituency. Opava Mayor Tomáš Navrátil (ANO) received the second highest number of votes, 15,265. On the contrary, Egyptologist Miroslav Bárt (STAN) won the senatorial mandate with the fewest votes, who received 6,352 votes in the Prague 2 electoral district. This follows from a comparison of the election results carried out by CTK today.

Jiří Drahoš, the current first vice-chairman of the senate, performed best in terms of the obtained percentages. In Prague 4, 74.26 percent of voters voted for him. The second highest percentage gain was recorded by Prostejov mayor František Jura (ANO), for whom 72.43 percent of voters voted. On the contrary, Jan Tecl (ODS), who defended the senatorial seat in the Chrudim district, won the closest in the second round with a gain of 52 percent.

Economist Oldřich Hájek (for ANO) and current senator Patrik Kunčar (KDU-ČSL) had the closest fight based on the number of votes. In the end, Hájek was elected as the new representative for the Zlín constituency with a difference of 731 votes. The difference between the winner Přemysl Rabas (SEN 21) and Jaroslav Komínek (KSČM) was also relatively close in the Chomutov electoral district, where the result was decided by a difference of 765 votes.

Of the candidates who advanced to the second round but did not win the mandate, the deputy mayor of Havlíčkov Brod Vladimír Slávka (ANO) collected the most votes. The 10,041 votes obtained would have been enough for him to win in ten other senate constituencies, but in Havlíčkobrodsk it meant a gain of less than 48 percent. More than 9,000 votes did not even bring doctor Igor Karen to the Senate, who was defeated by MP Ondřej Lochman (STAN) in the Mladá Boleslav constituency.

The average age of the newly elected members of the upper chamber is 53.7 years, the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) reported. The youngest senator elected this year, Zbyňek Sýkor (ODS), is 40 years old and is the 13th senator elected at this lowest possible age, said Eva Krumpová, first vice-president of the CZSO. On the other hand, the oldest senator elected this year, Senate Vice President Jiří Drahoš (STAN), is 75 years old.

Four candidates were elected to the upper parliamentary chamber this year, while Hana Žáková defended her senatorial mandate. In total, there will be 16 new senators in the upper chamber of the parliament.

This year’s second round of senate elections was traditionally accompanied by low voter interest. Only 17.54 percent of eligible voters went to the polls. It is the fifth lowest result for the second round since the creation of the Senate, if only regular elections are counted. The lowest voter turnout this year was in Prostějovsk, where only 12.15 percent of those who could vote went to the polls. At the opposite end of the ranking was Opava with a participation of 23.3 percent.

Among the municipalities, Třebařov in Svitavy region had the lowest voter turnout, where only 3.11 percent of voters came. It was followed by Malíkov, also in Svitavy, with a participation of 3.53 percent. People in Česká Ves na Jesenick had little interest in the elections. In the village, which was swept by a devastating flood two weeks ago, 4.11 percent of voters went to the polls.
