Petr Shkumatov, coordinator of the Blue Buckets movement, spoke about which brands of cars are actually stolen more often in Russia.
Previously, Russian insurance companies published statistics according to which the list of the most stolen cars in 2023 included cars of the VAZ, Mitsubishi, Chery and KamAZ brands. According to Shkumatov, quoted Channel 5the insurers’ data slightly do not correspond to the real picture, since they were compiled solely on the basis of information about their own clients.
As Shkumatov noted, as before, the main purpose of theft is to dismantle cars for spare parts, which are then either sold or used in services or taxi companies. The most popular car brands among criminals are Kia and Hyundai. In addition, due to changes in the car market, car thieves are paying attention to the domestic car industry.
“The VAZ is becoming our best-selling car, and they also began to cost quite a lot of money. The same Lada Vesta in showrooms costs 1.8 million. Because of this, firstly, they began to insure it, and secondly, there was an economic motive for stealing such cars,” the expert explained.
According to Shkumatov, this trend will continue in the coming years.
As for the premium segment, cars here are not dismantled, but legalized. However, due to the development of modern digital technologies, it is becoming increasingly difficult for hijackers. Therefore, criminals most often transport cars to other countries, where they manage to forge documents. But at the same time, if the car appears in Russia, the very first check by state traffic inspectors will show that it is stolen.
