With Boris Becker and ex-Federer coach Severin Lüthi, Holger Rune brought two of the most illustrious coaching names into his coaching staff at the end of December. Just a month and a half later, the Danish tennis shooting star separated from both Becker and Lüthi.
“Maybe we were a little naive,” says Rune’s mother Aneke in the “Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast” about the idea of bringing Lüthi into the team. It is possible that they were somewhat blinded by the Swiss’s great successes with Roger Federer.
Rune calls mother “the greatest inspiration”
In addition to their other commitments, Lüthi and Becker were not able to invest as much time in coaching Runes as the 20-year-old and his entourage had wanted. “I need people around me who know me and who can be with me around the clock,” said Rune in a statement from his new management IMG on Wednesday.

IMG has recently taken care of the world number 7’s press work, which was previously primarily headed by Aneke Rune. She rarely misses her son’s game. “She is the most important thing in the team, without her nothing works,” explained Boris Becker at Eurosport at the beginning of his work as Rune coach.
Entrepreneur and ex-ballet dancer
The shooting star himself describes his mother as the greatest inspiration in his career. In addition to her commitment to Holger’s tennis career, she also works as an entrepreneur for drinking water systems and is very successful at it. However, in some media reports, Aneke Rune is also described as overly protective. At first glance, the quick separations of Becker and Lüthi solidified the image of a family that has difficulty bringing external people into the team.
Mama Rune contradicts this and explains that actually only Rafael Nadal made it to the top with a family member (his uncle). External impulses are definitely desired. “But this coaching topic is new for us. Holger was previously with the same trainer for 15 years,” says the former ballet dancer.
Mother Rune emphasizes Holger’s high level of self-motivation
Even as an eight-year-old, tennis was everything for Holger, says his mother. The 54-year-old has a reputation for being very dominant. But it was always her son who motivated and pushed himself the most. Aneke Rune suspects that her gender plays a major role in the criticism directed at her.

The French Open 2022 showed that things can sometimes go wrong within the family. There was a scandal there when Aneke Rune left the stadium after loud demands from her son. But this is a thing of the past. Today, the 20-year-old sometimes gets annoyed by his mother’s cigarette consumption. “I told him: ‘If you win a Grand Slam, I’ll stop smoking!'”
