NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket fired its four main engines on Saturday on a test bed in Mississippi, but the engines shut down earlier than expected. The test was the last of eight NASA is holding on the ground aimed at ensuring the vehicle doesn’t have any major structural or engineering problems before being put on a launch pad. The rocket is the most powerful launch vehicle the space agency has ever built. The SLS was supposed to keep its engines running for about eight minutes, the length of time for the rocket on its orbital missions to be pushed beyond the atmosphere. It is still unclear why the engines shut down after just over a minute at NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The test was useful for gathering data, and “the teams are evaluating data on the early shutdown of the engine,” the space agency tweeted. The SLS is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to get Americans back to the lunar surface by the 1920s.
