The Most Popular Czech Names of 2022: Classic Names Lead, but Unconventional Variants are Rising

The Czech Statistical Office has published data on which Czech names are the most popular not only for last year, but also for the past 20 years. It can be seen that the classics are leading, but it also appears that more and more people are also reaching for less common variants.

The most popular names of 2022

Among the boys born in 2022, there were the most Jakubs, and among the girls Elišek. It’s not a big surprise because Jakub has been the most popular name for 12 years in a row and Eliška for the last 11 years.

“Jakub dominates boys’ first names, and this has been the case since 2011, when he took over from Jan. Jan, who was in second place last year, has appeared in the top ten most frequently given boys’ names every year since 1950. Jakub, on the other hand, broke into the top ten for the first time in 1984. The third position in 2022 was occupied by Matyáš, who in the top ten it has been featured since 2010,” says Marek Rojíček, chairman of the Czech Statistical Office.

The most common girl’s name is Eliška, who dethroned Tereza from the imaginary throne in 2012 (she was in sixth place last year). The second place was won by Viktorie, who has appeared in the top ten only since 2014. The third place was taken by Anna in 2022. “At the same time, the name Anna was among the ten most popular girls’ names even in the middle of the last century, and it has gradually returned to prominence since the 1990s,” adds Marek Rojíček.

The most popular names of the last 20 years

While around 1990, when choosing names, parents focused more on a few proven names, the current range is much wider. If you went through the names of girls born in 1990, there would only be ten of the most common names, but last year parents were already choosing from 29! Multi-word names are also more common, which were only very rare. Most often they are Anna Marie, Sofie Anna or Viktorie Anna, and for boys Duy Anh, Eliáš Jan, Mikuláš Jan.

The most popular names in the regions

If you compared the choice of names in the regions, then last year Jakub was the most popular boy’s name in all regions except Hradec Králové, where there were the most Matyášes. Eliška was the most successful in 11 regions, Anna overtook her only in Prague and the Pilsen region, and then Viktorie in the Liberec region.

Unusual names of 2022

Unusual boy names: Ashot, Bruce, Frank, Fred, Gulliver, Hilton, Ivor, Jonathan, Lothar, Maverick, Metin, Mikeš, Olaf, Rohan, Theoden and Ulrich.

Unusual girls’ names: Alba, Amira, Astrid, Celestýna, Elvíra, Ervína, Evira, Gaia, Inés, Jitřenka, Kara, Leticia, Malena, Medea, Trudy and Vesna.

Names after parents

Fathers passed their names on to sons more often than mothers to daughters. For example, the Antoníns are very active in passing on their name to their sons, 30 percent of them did so last year. Approximately a quarter of the fathers bearing the names Václav and Jindřich did the same. “In the case of mothers, roughly eight percent of mothers named Ludmila named their daughter after themselves, slightly less so did mothers named Natálie and Diana,” concludes Marek Rojíček.
