LO’s largest confederation is demanding increased taxes – Vedum is holding back
The trade union wants to increase taxes to finance more welfare, but Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (Sp) is holding back.
From last year to this year, the governing parties and SV have increased the general tax level in Norway by over NOK 46 billion. The finance minister tells Aftenposten that the goal is to avoid increasing the tax level further.
– The aim is to be able to continue the tax level we have now, says Vedum.
Artists sentenced for thefts of designer furniture
Four men from an art and tagging milieu have been convicted in the Oslo District Court for a series of thefts of expensive furniture. An artist in his 30s was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison, of which six months are suspended.
Two other defendants received one year and three months and one year and one month, of which five months were suspended. Fjerdemann, a man in his 20s, received 210 hours of community service, reports Dagens Næringsliv.
Previously, six other men in the same case complex and from the same environment were sentenced in the case, among them a rapper.
Biden says no to fighter jets to Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked Western allies to send fighter jets. But in an interview with ABC News last night Norwegian time, US President Joe Biden says that Zelenskyj has no need for fighter jets.
– He does not need F-16 aircraft now. I rule this out for the time being, says Biden.
– We send him what our experienced military leaders think he needs now. He needs tanks, he needs artillery, he needs air defense systems, says Biden.
Even more found dead in Brazil
The death toll in the flood- and landslide-stricken state of São Paulo in Brazil has risen to 57, new figures from the authorities show. 56 of them have been found in São Sebastião, which is located on the coast.
It was last weekend that heavy rain triggered floods and landslides in the coastal areas of the country’s richest state. Around 30 people are still missing. The death toll may therefore rise further.
13 missing after cyclone in New Zealand
The number of people missing after Cyclone Gabrielle, which ravaged New Zealand almost two weeks ago, has fallen to 13, the authorities say.
– Getting in touch with the remaining 13 remains a priority for the police and we are working as quickly as we can, says a statement from the New Zealand police in the morning hours today.
Win streak broken for Minnesota Wild
After four wins in a row, it was over for the Minnesota Wild. Mats Zuccarello’s team lost 2-1 at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs in tonight’s NHL match.
Mats Zuccarello’s teammate Brandon Duhaime was responsible for the first goal after 12 minutes in the first period. Four minutes later, the Maple Leafs’ David Kampf equalized.
