A new study proves that the impact of the emerging corona virus extends beyond the physical health of the infected, as it affects their mental health.
A prominent psychiatrist has warned that the “Covid-19” pandemic may be the greatest damage to human mental health, since World War II, according to “Sky News”.
The head of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Adrian James, said that even when the virus is under control, there will be “profound” long-term consequences, during his interview with the British newspaper, The Guardian.
James added, “This pandemic may be the most harmful to mental health since World War II.”
According to the prominent doctor in the field, it does not stop when the virus is controlled, and the numbers of infected people dwindle, as the dire consequences on mental health will continue for years to come.
Doctors also confirm that some will be affected by the loss of a person close to them due to the epidemic, or the loss of their jobs due to the financial crisis, or psychologically affected by periods of closures and deprivation of human interaction with relatives and friends.
The Mental Health Charity Mind said in November that more people had suffered from a mental health crisis during the Coronavirus pandemic than at any time in the past.
There was a 15 percent increase in urgent referrals for people with mental health crises from March through July of this year, and 2,276 severe referrals were made in July 2020 compared to the same month last year, according to Mind.
James’s comments also come after a report released in October revealed that up to 10 million people, including 1.5 million children, in Britain may need mental health sessions and care following the pandemic.
According to mental health experts in cooperation with the British Health Organization, they will need help to treat depression and anxiety, while health workers may develop cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
