The Most Expensive Rescue in History: Viking Raid Performance in Navarra

The General Directorate of Culture – Príncipe de Viana Institution, together with the Royal and General Archive of Navarra, has scheduled four performances this Christmas, two in Spanish and two in Basque, of the work “The most expensive rescue in history”.

The author Ventura Ruiz has created this piece especially for the occasion, highlighting a peculiar chapter in Navarrese history: the Viking raid in the 9th century.

The work, conceived in a casual manner, transports the public to a bygone era, remembering the presence of the Vikings in the lands of Navarra and offering a lively portrait of the historical context of the 9th century.

The performances, with free admission by withdrawing invitations one hour before each performance, will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Royal and General Archive of Navarra on December 26 (in Spanish) and December 28 (in Basque ), at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. You can withdraw a maximum of four invitations per person, until capacity is reached.

The Theater Group of the Public University of Navarra, directed by Oskar Orzaiz for the performance in Spanish and Jaione Urtasun for the performance in Basque, will bring to life the characters of this captivating story.

Kidnapping of the king of Pamplona

“The most expensive rescue in history” narrates the intriguing episode of the kidnapping of the king of Pamplona, ​​García Íñiguez, in the year 859, at the hands of Viking warriors whose arrival in Pamplona remains a mystery. The kidnappers demand a ransom unprecedented in history: 70,000 dinars. The plot not only weaves concern about the king’s fate, but also the repercussions that paying such a high ransom will have on increasing taxes for everyone.

An event that unites fun and history in a unique setting.
