The Most Expensive Mistakes in the 100 Club: Neymar, Hazard, Dembélé, Coutinho, Griezmann

München – Welcome to the club, Mister Kane! With his transfer from Tottenham to FC Bayern for more than 100 million euros, the captain of the English national team is only the 17th player for whom a transfer fee in the three-digit million range was paid. His predecessors in the elite 100s club include illustrious names such as Neymar, Eden Hazard and Ousmane Dembélé.

But the fact is: Of the most expensive players in football history, hardly any of them lived up to their transfer fee, some even degenerated into historical flops! An overview of the five most expensive mistakes in the 100 club:

Neymar: For 222 million euros from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain

In order to lure the Brazilian to Paris Saint-Germain, the Qatari sheikhs made a whopping 222 million euros available in the summer. The most expensive player in football history to date never really lived up to the enormously high expectations, instead he filled the gazettes with star airs, wild party nights and constant injuries.

Nationally, Neymar has won everything with PSG, but at European level he hasn’t ripped anything. Even his own fans are fed up with him. This summer he moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Hilal. Cost point: Comparatively “cheap” 90 million euros.

Grades: Bayern star surprisingly in the starting XI – against Bremen he reports …

Eden Hazard: For 115 million euros from Chelsea to Real Madrid

The Belgian offensive player joined the Galactics in 2018 for 115 million euros and should make the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus Turin) forgotten.

Hazard was considered one of the best in the world at the time. Certainly not without reason, but that changed with his move to Madrid. The Belgian was apparently unfit, overweight, unmotivated – and soon through with the fans.

During his five years at Real, he only made 76 appearances, scoring a miserable seven goals. The Hazard transfer was a complete disaster for Los Blancos.

Ousmane Dembélé: For 135 million euros from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona

Another young millionaire whom a more professional – or any – professional approach would certainly not have harmed. In 2017, Ousmane Dembélé went on strike for 135 million euros to FC Barcelona and made headlines when he moved there because he left his apartment in Dortmund so dirty that even his landlord sued him.

In the years that followed, he didn’t bring much order into his life; instead, reports of nights spent gambling through it made the rounds. Due to numerous injuries, he never matured into a top performer in Barcelona. This summer he joined PSG for 50 million.

Philippe Coutinho: For 135 million euros from Liverpool FC to FC Barcelona

The second mega flop for which FC Barcelona paid more than 100 million euros. In the winter of 2018, Philippe Coutinho signed from Liverpool. At the Catalans, the attacking midfielder was mainly used as a left winger and was therefore never really able to call on his qualities, and the interaction with Lionel Messi didn’t work either.

Fate took an absurd turn after Coutinho’s move to Bayern: In the Champions League quarter-finals in 2020, Munich’s Barca historically finished 8-2 and later won the handle pot.

Worse still, Liverpool had secured a clause in the sale that guaranteed them an additional payment of five million euros in the event that Coutinho wins the premier class during his first contract term in Barcelona. So for Barca, Coutinho was a flop in several ways.

Antoine Griezmann: For 120 million euros from Atlético Madrid to FC Barcelona

Antoine Griezmann completes the flop hat-trick for Barcelona. In 2019, the Frenchman joined the Blaugrana for €120m but like so many of his predecessors, he fell far short of expectations.

He, too, had great problems finding his way in the Catalans’ game system, which was fully tailored to Messi. He was loaned back to Atlético two years later and signed on for €20m that summer.

Harry Kane at Bayern: Englishman is a record transfer from Munich

And Harry Kane? FC Bayern is expecting a lot from the new record transfer – never before in the club’s history have FC Bayern paid such a high fee for a player.

In any case, the beginning of the Kane era in Munich was already promising: At the start of the league, the striker made his debut in the starting eleven and immediately contributed an assist and a goal in the 4-0 win over Werder Bremen. In any case, it can go on like this!
